Hey Ken, Looks like we have a lot of ideas in common. Love the lamellar! It is exactly how I want to do my own. I am almost done with a plank shield that I am making out of 1" rough cut cedar. Need to do a few more things to finish it off and came up with another idea for my shield boss. Cheers! Brian
The 1/4" poplar holds up well if it's covered with canvas. Note the canvas must be bonded all the way through with glue, I painted a 1:3 mixture of glue:water and made sure there were no bubbles.
If the shield is going to be used for HEMA I'd recommend 1/4" plywood or get an aircraft aluminum shield blank and cover it with canvas or 1/8" poplar
